What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels — most commonly made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body — that restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. They work by physically adding volume beneath the skin’s surface, and can also stimulate collagen production over time. Results are immediate and can last from several months to over a year depending on the product and area treated.

What can dermal fillers treat?

Dermal fillers can address a wide range of concerns, including lip enhancement, cheek augmentation, jawline definition, chin projection, under-eye hollows (tear troughs), nasolabial folds, marionette lines, temple hollowing, and hand rejuvenation. They can also be used for non-surgical nose reshaping (rhinoplasty). We’ll assess your face holistically at consultation to recommend treatments that balance and enhance your natural features.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Longevity varies by product, area, and individual metabolism. Lip fillers typically last 6–12 months. Cheek, jawline, and chin fillers often last 12–18 months or more. Tear trough filler generally lasts 12–18 months. Denser, deeper fillers used for structural support tend to outlast those used in high-movement areas. We’ll advise expected longevity for your specific treatment plan.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Most hyaluronic acid fillers contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, within the formulation — so discomfort reduces significantly as the treatment progresses. For particularly sensitive areas such as the lips, we apply a topical numbing cream beforehand. Most clients find the discomfort very manageable, rating it a 2–3 out of 10. The actual injection time is brief.

What is the downtime after dermal fillers?

Some swelling and possibly bruising is normal, particularly with lip filler, and typically peaks at 24–48 hours before subsiding. Most clients feel comfortable returning to work the next day. More significant bruising can occasionally last up to a week. We always advise planning major social events at least 2 weeks after filler treatment to allow full settling.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are among the most extensively studied and used aesthetic products in the world. When administered by a trained, medically qualified practitioner with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, they carry a very low risk profile. The most important safety measure is choosing a qualified provider — serious complications almost always occur in unqualified hands.

What are the risks and side effects of dermal fillers?

Common and expected side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at injection sites. Less commonly, lumps or asymmetry can occur, which can be reviewed and adjusted. The most serious rare risk is vascular occlusion — where filler inadvertently enters a blood vessel. This is why we carry and are trained to use hyaluronidase (the filler dissolving agent) at every appointment.

Can dermal fillers be dissolved?

Yes — hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This can be used to correct unsatisfactory results, address complications, or reverse filler that no longer suits your face. Dissolving typically takes effect within 24–48 hours. This is one of the key reasons we use hyaluronic acid fillers — the reversibility is a crucial safety net.

Will dermal fillers make me look unnatural or overdone?

Only if the wrong amount or wrong product is used. At Crystalline Clinic, we take a conservative, anatomy-led approach that prioritises natural enhancement over dramatic change. We’d rather you look like a well-rested, more defined version of yourself than someone who’s visibly had work done. We’ll always show you images, discuss your goals thoroughly, and obtain informed consent before proceeding.

How soon will I see results from dermal fillers?

Results are visible immediately after treatment, though initial swelling means the final result isn’t fully apparent for 10–14 days. Lip filler in particular can look quite swollen in the first 48 hours before settling into its natural shape. We recommend assessing results at the 2-week mark, after which a review or top-up can be arranged if needed.

Can I exercise after dermal fillers?

We advise avoiding strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours post-treatment. Increased blood pressure and body heat can intensify bruising and swelling. After 48 hours, normal exercise can resume. Avoid any facial massage or intense pressure on treated areas for at least 2 weeks.

What should I avoid before getting dermal fillers?

To minimise bruising, avoid blood-thinning substances for 48–72 hours before treatment where possible: ibuprofen, aspirin (unless prescribed), fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol. Arnica supplements can help reduce bruising if started a few days before. Always inform us of any prescribed medications before your appointment.

What is the difference between cheap fillers and premium fillers?

Not all filler products are equal. Premium fillers from reputable manufacturers are rigorously tested, have consistent viscosity and lift capacity, and carry CE marking in the UK. Cheaper, unbranded fillers may have variable concentrations, higher complication rates, and limited safety data. Can filler migrate over time?

Migration is a real phenomenon, most commonly seen with lip filler treated repeatedly with large volumes over many years. It’s far less common with modern techniques and appropriate volumes. If you have previously treated areas you’re concerned about, we can assess and advise accordingly.

Is it true fillers stretch your skin permanently?

This is a common concern. Moderate filler use, particularly with hyaluronic acid, is unlikely to cause permanent skin changes. Very large volumes maintained over many years could theoretically affect skin laxity in some areas, which is why responsible practitioners take a conservative approach. We’ll always advise you on maintaining results in a way that supports your long-term skin health.
